Frequently asked questions
Food and supplement labeling FAQ
Useful project conversations start with a shared understanding of scope, methods, and limits.
Start a projectWhat does a label review cost?
AEG bills hourly for the agreed review and any revisions. The project estimate reflects SKU count, formula complexity, available data, claims and artwork. Scope and estimated cost are agreed before work begins.
How long does a review take?
Turnaround depends on the project and the materials supplied. Genesis R&D-based panel work using a supplied formula and complete supporting materials takes about one week on average. Claims-only reviews, artwork-only reviews and audits of labels already on shelf receive a project-specific delivery date after the scope and inputs are reviewed. Missing information or complex work may extend timing.
Are revisions included?
Revisions are part of the consulting service and are billed for time spent at the agreed hourly rate. Formula changes, new claims or additional artwork may affect the estimated hours and delivery schedule; agree any additional scope before work continues.
Do I need lab testing?
It depends on your product, processing, supplier data and claims. Database calculations can support nutrition panels, but they do not replace every testing need. Aimee flags data gaps and potential testing needs during the review. AEG does not run a laboratory.
Is this suitable for a startup or an established brand?
The service fits a first product launch, a reformulation or a label audit for an established brand. Send your category, number of SKUs and project stage so Aimee can confirm the fit.
Can you review a label already on shelf?
Yes. Share the current artwork and explain what has changed or what you want checked. Aimee confirms the inputs and scope for the audit.
How is this different from label software?
Software calculates a panel from the data entered. Aimee also reviews the inputs, ingredient and allergen statements, proposed claims and artwork, and explains the changes needed. Genesis R&D is one tool in that review.
What labeling services and markets does AEG cover?
AEG supports U.S. FDA-regulated packaged food, beverage, and dietary supplement labeling: Nutrition Facts, Supplement Facts, ingredients, allergens, claims, and artwork review. The framework includes 21 CFR Part 101, section 101.9 for food nutrition labeling, section 101.36 for supplement nutrition labeling, FALCPA and the FASTER Act for major allergens, and DSHEA requirements for supplement structure/function claims. USDA labeling, Canadian requirements, California Proposition 65 assessments, NDI notifications, claim-substantiation dossiers, and regulatory filings are outside the standard scope.
What will I receive?
Depending on the agreed workstreams, deliverables may include a Nutrition Facts or Supplement Facts panel file, a nutrient analysis report, an ingredient and allergen statement, marked-up label artwork, and a written claims review memo. The proposal defines which deliverables and file formats are included. Laboratory testing, a legal opinion, government approval, and regulatory filings are not included in a standard label review.
What should I send, and can we discuss an NDA first?
Begin with your product category, number of SKUs, intended U.S. market, project stage, and target date. For the review, prepare the formula with amounts, supplier specifications and allergen information, available nutrition or lab data, serving information, draft artwork, and exact proposed claims. Request NDA arrangements before sending a confidential formula or proprietary supporting materials.
Can AEG approve my label or clear a supplement health claim?
AEG provides labeling and claims review, not FDA approval or a legal opinion. FDA generally does not pre-approve food or dietary supplement labels. Supplement structure/function language must be supported and distinguished from disease claims; applicable disclaimer and FDA notification requirements also need to be addressed. A label review does not include submitting notifications or establishing ingredient safety unless separately and explicitly scoped.
